CONCIERGE BOUTIQUE HOTEL & FREEDOM CAFÉ

36 Campbell Avenue, Windermere, Berea, South Africa
In an attempt to conserve their historic character, these former Victorian row houses were recycled and upgraded as hotel accommodation, while their backyards were cleared for a parking area, at the head of which a brightly coloured shipping container provides reception and restaurant facilities. This intervention is distinguished by the careful reintegration of heritage, the space generated through re-conceptualisation, and its contribution to the revival of the enclave. The Excellence Awards’ jury deemed this development an event in urban space that is worth experiencing, enjoying and re-living.
