Townsend Architects – Amber Glades Assisted Living

June Newsletter

Location: Karkloof, Howick, KZN

Stage: Complete

Amber Glades is a senior living community in Howick, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. The building presents stylish, comfortable, and homely apartments with all the practical benefits of community and assisted living.

One of the most exciting aspects of working on Amber Glades is that it is a building all about people, and about creating a community space. This presented wonderful opportunities to not only create well designed private apartments, but more importantly to think about all the linking spaces in between the apartments, and the hierarchy of private space, to semiprivate space outside the apartments, through to more public parts of the building where there is meeting, dining and recreational spaces in the common areas.

EDGE (“Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies”) is a green building standard and is an international green building certification system. Amber Glades obtained EDGE certification for the 160 Residential Units through specification of Building Materials, Fittings, Finishes & Equipment to achieve a 23% Energy Saving, a 36% Water Saving & 43% Saving of less Embodied Energy in Materials.
Not only does this building cut down on the pressure on the environment but it also contributes to the day-to-day operational cost savings as shown below:
2.39 tCO₂/unit/year Operational CO₂ Emissions
0.92 tCO₂/unit/year Operational CO₂ Savings

There are four apartment layouts to choose from which are laid out for universal accessibility, and specifically designed with the evolving picture of senior living in mind, to cater for the philosophy of ‘ageing in place’ and ‘person directed’ care.
