Working at the edge of change: new homes, alternative paradigms and aspirations
Aspirational dwellings, amapillars, Top Billing homes, for want of a working nomenclature, litter the landscape of not only KwaZulu-Natal, but the country as a whole. Replacing traditional villages in the Eastern Cape, they are subaltern indicators of development, aspiration and unseat the official discourse of service delivery. This paper discusses the phenomenon as a practical, evidential solution to finding the middle ground in contemporary South Africa.
