Bellhaven Harm Reduction Centre–A critical place-maker of hope, healing and partnerships
Architects and planners know about placemaking. However, critical placemaking is a term that is not often used. Critical placemaking involves creating spaces that are inclusive, equitable, and responsive to the needs of all people, particularly those that are marginalised and vulnerable. The Bellhaven Harm Reduction Centre in Durban exemplifies critical placemaking. Through providing low-threshold harm reduction services to a highly stigmatised population group in a central, off-street facility, this centre has transformed narratives and approaches toward drug use and homelessness. Inclusivity in cities requires interventions that are focused on critical placemaking
