April 2013 – Letter from KZNIA President – Kevin Bingham

Dear Members

The end of April has arrived and with tomorrow being 1 May (Worker’s Day) we should all reflect on the meaning of this day for ourselves and for our staff whose efforts have made our architecture what it is. With the increasing demands for Architects in seeing our projects through from conception to fruition, and for us as Architects being expected to have skills in absolutely everything, it is becoming more and more rewarding to have fellow Workers with a broad range of talents to assist in the broadening field of Architecture.

This past month has been no less busy at 160 Bulwer Road than the last. The opening of the Lost Projects exhibition was very well attended, with work on display by Derek Thomas, Design Workshop, FGG Architects, Koop Design, MAB Ikhwezi Architects, Ruben Reddy Architects, Sphere Design & Architects, and Theunissen Jankowitz Architects. One wonders how many other projects lie in filing drawers, on hanging clips or on memory sticks around the province.

The KZNIA’s forthcoming exhibition is entitled publiCITY and offers our membership an opportunity to present a favourite project of theirs for the public to view at the KZNSA Gallery from 15-19 May 2013. This could include models, travel sketch diaries, 3D presentations, posters etc. Please notify Des (des@kznia.org.za) of your intention to participate and have the material through to the KZNIA by 8 May.

The KZNIA was privileged to be given custody of almost the entire architectural library of the late Dr Michael Keath. We thank his widow Di Higginson-Keath and his family for this gesture that will be enjoyed by our members for many years to come.

Some snippets on the Task Team fronts:

  • UIA 2014 – Preparing to knock the socks off of visiting architects!
  • Practice Committee – Municipal liaison, updating of the Practice Manual;
  • Education: Open Architecture Programme Director interviews and University liaison;
  • Heritage: Photographic competition & movie clip;
  • Promotions & Events: publiCITY exhibition & Awards of Merit

That’s about it for now.

‘Til next

Regards

Kevin
