UMKHUMBANE COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTRE

Cato Manor, Umkumbaan, Durban, South Africa
Cato Manor was a site where forced removals had taken place under apartheid and was, in the early 2000s, in the process of being repopulated by working class Durbanites. Healthcare and community facilities were provided for under an industrial roof of large spans, with a monitor providing natural light and ventilation to the patient circulation mall, off which a large number of rooms of various sizes and functions are reached. The programmatic requirements were well attuned to both the sloping site and user comfort, and the building provided an appropriate response for a street corner in a developing area.
