hah Ghulam Muhammad Habibi, popularly known as Soofie Saheb, was born in 1850 in India. In 1895, at the prompting of his Sufi master, he arrived in South Africa and founded a small masjid and khanqah (spiritual retreat)  in Riverside, the first of many buildings he established in various parts of Southern Africa, including six religious centres in and around Durban. Saheb died in 1911 and lies buried next to his mother at the Riverside shrine.
